Experiencing East Germany

DDR

We went to the German Democratic Republic's Museum yesterday, but somehow we failed to get the full experience. Even the Trabbi they had had been rebuilt into a simulator that looked like it would never move under its own power again. So we hired a real one.

The thing is hilarious, and then one we got was very well maintained. Started like a dream, and … well … there wasn't much else that could have gone wrong with the thing. The climate control appears to have been replaced by windows that could go up and down. The procedure for the reversing gear was described as needing a bit of momentum. And cobble stone roads meant you needed a megaphone if you wanted to understand the navigation instruction of the passenger. All in all, a very good drive.

We also went to the Gaming Museum, which was an excellent example of combining cabinets of pristine looking collections of old machines, with interactive exhibits. You of course had to have all the old classics accessible like Puckman and Space Invadors II, but also looked like they had an interesting selection of games that they cycled through. Unfortunately, the place also became a bit of a playground for kids to just dominate a console and game, which makes it seem like it could only become less enjoyable with more people.

Finding dinner failed a bit. We kept on thinking that just around the next corner there would be the ultimate selection of different cuisines. And after every corner failed us, we settled for a Beergarten. And by the time we got there, even they stopped serving food. At least it was nice and calm. Should be a nice introduction for tomorrows next travel relax day.
