German punctuality
I keep on getting told that the German trains are very punctual, which is always something I've taken with a grain of salt. The first reply is: "Yes, because 15 minutes late still counts as on time."
I had four trains to catch today. The first three trains all took half an hour each, with half hour breaks in between. First two trains, all punctual, all easy. The third train arrived on time, but then delayed it's departure slightly as they were "waiting for passengers from a delayed train". Great, and I was already looking at a connection time of 10 minutes. But it started 8 minutes delayed, giving me two minutes. Should be able to make.
"We are experiencing further delays as we have missed our slot and need to wait for the next one." Okay, maybe they'll delay my connection, considering that's what they did to me.
"For those of you that will miss your connection as a consequence of the delay, here are the next trains to various destinations". So that's a no.
Arrive at the station, and first have to ask: is my ticket still valid on the next train. Answer: Where is the damn information desk. Went around three times, walking half a kilometre of something, trying to find it, completely unsignposted. Final answer: yes.
Okay, don't need to buy a new ticket, next train is on Platform 2 ... with 5 minutes delay. Or rather, it arrived five after it was meant to depart. And considering that this was a terminus station, that meant some engine rearrangement. Okay, so we depart with a 20 minute delay, or 50 minute delay from when I was supposed to be with the previous train.
50 minutes later, we stop 12km short of the destination, in the middle of nowhere. "We are experiencing some real electrical issues with our engine. Expected delay is unknown." What? We are already in the correct city, let me out here!
Surprisingly we were moving again 5 minutes later, to give me a total delay of about 1 hour. Take that, german punctuality.
Otherwise, I'm bouncing from one relative to the next again, and my camera team is finally back as well. Which will mean more walks through nature, photographable landscapes, and a slightly older kid and seemingly far easier kid to be around.
After southern hemisphere winter got me so used to short days, and the sun going under at 5pm, I actually get slightly freaked out by the late sunset. I just keep on trying to think about things that I might want to do now that the sunset has happened, to find myself wrapped up in bed and the clock already at midnight.
