Melbourne and Australia Day

Only three weeks of holidays to go before the University life starts again, so I guess it's time that I finally start traveling a little bit. And after it proved to be so much fun last time, we went for Melbourne again.

The drive was long but fine. And to blend in, even the highway patrol vehicles started sporting Australian flags on top of their cars. What confuses us though are the odd wooden pillars on each side of the road. They reach high over the highway, and occasionally have a metal net between the two. A clever Koala might use this to cross the highway without offering themselves as roadkill, but somehow I don't quite believe that this was their original intent.

Having previously lived in a European city that had trams, I tend to get fairly nostalgic about trams seeing trams. The smooth gliding combined with the rough sounds between different rail sections. Even the sound of tires going orthogonal over the track. But what struck me for a second was when I looked at one of the trams moving off, I was suddenly very confused as to what it was doing driving on the left hand side.

And, just after sunset, we got to enjoy the Australia day fireworks. Loud bands, whistling somethings, glittering love hearts, it was all there. What was new for me was when they made it look like they lit up water surface (of the lake the launchers were in the middle of) with a sea of sparkles, and I'm still not too sure how they did that.
