Shandong University Chinese Lecture (山東大學)

At one of the official welcoming dinners, we were discussing about how we were attempting to find ways to engage students, make them participate during the lecture, answer questions and the such. The reply we received was rather diplomatic:
'From the beginning of their education, students have been told to be quiet and listen. It's like feeding a duck.'
Our reply: 'But how do you kick the duck?'

Well, today we discovered that this wasn't actually true. We managed to get ourselves into a C Programming Lecture, which we enjoyed as a proper student, wooden seats and all. We may not have understood the Chinese, but the lecture looked very well done, teaching C code completely without slides but interactively and on a black board. And he did also manage to teach with people responding, occasionally in a chorus similar to the way primary school kids greet their teacher after 'Good morning Class'. Maybe the university should be sending people to Weihai to learn C as opposed to grabbing students from Weihai and teaching them Java.
(Btw. you know how somehow people go through a pack of smokes per day? This lecturer went through a pack of crayons per lecture, breaking them very steadily.)

I didn't have anything to teach during today's english taught lecture, but unfortunately I appear to have had to suffer my customary travelling sickness for this trip, so I wouldn't have been able to teach a lot anyway. Luckily, this time it appeared to only have been rather mild, and I'm on my feet again. :-)

We tested how well I was feeling again by taking another stroll outside to take another look at the night life, to be a little bit disappointed that all the activity in the central square appears to have disappeared. Maybe it was a Wednesday things ...?
