The spiders are coming!
So ... turns out that the area that we thought was really central, and nicely cheap, also happens to be one of the immigration suburbs. This consequently means that we stick out like sore thumbs in the crows. What was less encouraging though was when you typed the name of the area into google and the first hit was a forum about what areas to avoid at night. So ... we decided that we should probably make sure to be back before sundown tonight.
Walk a block in any direction though and immediately things look far more spanish again. They have some interesting old building scattered about, not quite as fancy as some of the Gaudi building, but also a little less scattered across the city. It still has the charm of all the funky side streets, and of course it also has yet another dialect of Spanish that may or may not be used on restaurant cards to confuse google translate, and more importantly, us.
They also have the Guggenheim museum here, which has exactly the same spider on the outside as we have previously found in Roppongi in Tokyo. Turns out there are quite a few places around the world that have a copy of this exact artwork. While the spider is cool and all, I'm confused why this one appears to be making a repeated appearance in my life when there seem to be so many other pieces of art which want to introduce themselves. Maybe this one (at 10m height) is the only one big enough for me to make note of.
Tomorrow the cupcake should be allowed to stretch itself again as we figure out what other parts of the Spanish countryside we can attack / sit on. Hopefully we also get up a little earlier so that we don't end up driving through the night again on random roads that never seem to signpost what you want.
